Coming into the 2024-25 regular season, I don't think anyone anticipated the level of success Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin has had so far.

It's no secret that Alexander Ovechkin came into this season with one goal in mind -- breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time scoring record.
After suffering a broken left fibula back in November against Utah HC, many assumed his season was over, shifting their focus to next year for his shot at shattering Gretzky's record.
While Ovechkin's injury was undoubtedly a crushing blow, his return to the ice has been triumphant, to say the least.
After last night's win against the Boston Bruins, the Capitals captain notched his 891st goal, just 4 goals shy of the all-time scoring record.
With 8 games left in the regular season, Ovechkin still has plenty of time to accomplish his goal.
Ovechkin's quest for the scoring crown looks inevitable, but the big question remains -- what's next for the Russian legend?

Alexander Ovechkin provides retirement hint

Currently 39 years of age, it's safe to assume that Alexander Ovechkin has reached the twilight of his career.
According to Puckpedia, his contract was signed on July 27, 2021, and expires at the end of the 2025-26 season, when Ovechkin will be 40 years old.
In an interview last year, Ovechkin was asked if he'd consider retiring once his contract expires --an idea he seemed open to.
«I think, yes,» Ovechkin said when asked whether he'll call it quits when his contract expires (via RMNB).

No one knows when Ovechkin will call it quits. After claiming Wayne Gretzky's all-time scoring record, he will have achieved one of the most decorated NHL careers in hockey history.
Will Ovechkin hang up the skates after the 2026 season? Time will tell.
