There are many ways in which one can look at Andrew Mangiapane's 2024-25 season and conclude that it was a good one, in particular from a defensive-forward point of view. Yet, when you look at his statistics and compare them to his salary, his rating then drops considerably.
Here's a tongue-twister for you: Mangiapane is a solid bottom-6, with a middle-6 contract, with no room on his team's top-6. This pretty much sum's up his place on the Washington Capitals roster.
According to an RMNB's Attributes Card, Mangiapane scored Strength 5, Intelligence 5, Speed 5, Endurance 9, Personality 6, and Luck 6.
Andrew scored 14 goals this season and 14 assists, in 81 games played and with 13 minutes of ice-time per appearance. He had a 53% shot attempts, 54% expected goals, and 51% actual goals.
Mangiapane's Isolated Impact by HockeyViz shows that he scored a +6% xGF/60, and a -6% xGA/60, both of which are good numbers, when you consider his bottom-6 role on the team. Andrew also scored a +5.1 on Synthetic Goals for his overall impact when on the ice.
In the offensive zone, Mangiapane was most effective in rebounds created/60, deflection assists/60, and passes from center/60, according to All Three Zones.
In the neutral zone, Mangiapane rated a minus or even on most micro-areas of the game while on the ice, with his play improving considerably in the d-zone, in particular with recovered dump-ins/60 and pressures/60.
Andrew Mangiapane scored a moderate Fan Happiness open survey, with 3.4. Readers of RMNB were asked, On a scale of 1-5, how HAPPY are you to have this player on your team.
One fact about Andrew Mangiapane that jumps off the page is that he's a bottom-6 forward that had an AAV cap hit of $5.8M. It's a stat that doesn't reconcile.
Mangiapane went from playing about 16 min/game with Calgary, to under 13 minutes with Washington, and played top-6 minutes in only 5 games this season, where he averaged under 10 minutes per ice-time.
In Andrew's defense, in those top-6 minutes, he was very good, with only three Caps players seeing opponents get a lower rate of high-danger chances - Dowd, Duhaime, and Eller. With the number of good prospects DC has (PLD, McMichael, Protas), there may not be room for Mangiapane in the top six - he will likely be the odd man out.
