The New York Islanders have been granted permission to speak with Brendan Shanahan, to fill the position that was vacated by Lou Lamoriello.

Lamoriello will not be returning to the Island as GM and President of Hockey Operations, following a season in which the Islanders did not qualify for the post-season.
On the other, the Maple Leafs qualified for a record nine straight seasons, the active NHL record. Yet, it was not enough to retain Brendan Shanahan's services.
"I think everyone would be shocked - at this point - if he (Shanahan) were to come back," TheLeafsNation posted.

Shanahan finds new team

Toronto's playoff disappointments are widely recorded, having won a total of only two playoff series in nine years, when the expectations were so high. Many experts had projected the Leafs would go all the way to the finals this season.
Both the Islanders and the Maple Leafs have plenty of work to do this off-season, and both teams must be diligent in filling their top front office positions.
Toronto's Mitch Mariner and John Tavares are entering free agency this season, while the new GM will have many decisions to make with regard to the remaining core-four.
The New York Islanders have the number one pick in this year's NHL draft, projected to be Matthew Schaefer, a potential stud D-man. He would be a key addition for their rebuild.
It is uncertain whether Lou Lamoriello, the former Leafs GM from 2015 - 2018, will be looking for another team for which to hire-out his services.
Brendan Shanahan issued a statement today, which clarifies both his position and his sentiments.
" Following a meeting today, I was informed that I was no longer going to remain as President and Alternate Governor of the Toronto Maple Leafs...I greatly enjoyed working with Brad and Craig, and I firmly believe they are excellent in their roles...Also, I want to thank the players, they are committed and passionate about delivering a championship to this city."

We wish Brendan all the best in his endevors.
