Spencer Carbery has been named one of the three finalists for the Jack Adams Award, which is presented annually to the NHL's Coach of the Year.

Capitals bench boss Spencer Carbery reacts to being named coach of the year finalist.

Chris Cerullo from RMNB writes that in just his second year as head coach, Spencer Carbery guided the Washington Capitals to a remarkable turnaround, finishing with a 51-22-9 record, the best in the Eastern Conference. After narrowly making the playoffs last season, the Capitals became the first team to secure a postseason berth this year.
«Tremendous honor. Very, very humbling. For us, I look at it as a staff, for that matter, organizational nomination. Just knowing the other 31 head coaches in this league and the amount of respect that I have for them, so to be considered for that award, I look at our entire staff and everything that they put in, our players, management to provide the players everything." -Carbery

Cerullo writes that Carbery placed seventh in Jack Adams Award voting last year, but led a massive improvement this season. Under his guidance, the Capitals scored 70 more goals and gave up 23 fewer, swinging their goal differential from -36 to +57, a remarkable 93-goal turnaround. They also earned 20 more points in the standings than the year before.
«For my name to be there as the figurehead of the organization, I look at that, to me, that's a team-nominated award of what we've done as a coaching staff, management team, our players, what they've accomplished in the regular season.» -Carbery

The 43-year-old ex-player is the sixth Capitals coach to be named a Jack Adams Award finalist and the first since Barry Trotz in 2016. Three Washington coaches have previously won the honor: Trotz (2016), Bruce Boudreau (2008), and Bryan Murray (1984). Ron Wilson (2000) and the late Tom McVie (1977) also received finalist nods, finishing third and second respectively.
Cerullo also writes that while the postseason is not accounted for in the voting, Carbery also just led the Capitals to their first playoff series victory since the club won the Stanley Cup under Trotz in 2018.
The winner will be announced at the NHL Awards in June.
