Former Washington Capitals Head Coach has found a new job
Former Washington Capitals Head Coach has found a new coaching position with a Capitals division rival, the Philadelphia Flyers.
The former Washington Capitals Head Coach Todd Reirden has found a new job inside of the Metropolitan division with the division rival Philadelphia Flyers. Todd Reirden has signed on with the Philadelphia Flyers to be an assistant coach on Rick Tocchet's Flyers staff according to Hockey Insider
Frank Seravalli.
Todd Reirden who was previously on the Pittsburgh Penguins staff was let go from his assistant coaching position on Mike Sullivan's staff in 2024 following the Penguins failing to make the playoffs.
Todd Reirden had held that prior position since he was fired by the Washington Capitals in 2020. Prior to Washington Todd Reirden was an assistant with Pittsburgh until 2014 when he joined the Washington Capitals staff.
Todd Reirden is back in the NHL with the Flyers.
Todd Reirden's tenure in Washington started off promising as he was an assistant coach under Barry Trotz during the Washington Capitals Stanley Cup season in 2017-2018. Following the Championship season Berry Trotz was let go by Ted Leonsis following a contract dispute.
Todd Reirden became the likely successor to guide the defending champions for the 2018-2019 season.
Despite back-to-back Metropolitan Division championships, the Washington Capitals would struggle in the postseason under Reirden's reign. The Washington Capitals would fall in 7 games to the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round of the 2018-2019 playoffs.
That series was particularly heartbreaking for the Washington Capitals as they blew a 3-2 series lead and would also blow a 3-2 lead in the 3rd period of a game 7 in which the Carolina Hurricanes would come back to defeat the Washington Capitals in double overtime.
During the covid playoff year in 2020 the Washington Capitals would underachieve in the bubble falling to the New York Islanders in a lackluster 5 game series which the Isles lead 3 games to 0. The poor playoff showing by the Washington Capitals led to Todd Reirden's tenure in Washington coming to a premature end.
By joining Rick Tocchet's staff, Reirden hopes to help turnaround a Philadelphia Flyers team that went 33-39-10 and was tied with the Boston Bruins for worst in the Eastern Conference.
