It is likely that TJ Oshie will announce his retirement on Monday, June 9th, when he takes to the stage at 5:30 pm, for an event at the Washington Harbor in Georgetown, according to an official Washington Capitals announcement on social media.

TJ did not play in 2024-25, as most fans know, because of a chronic back issue that also restricted his availability to only 52 games in 2023-24, in which he scored 12 goals and 13 assists, and one playoff assist against the New York Rangers that same season.

TJ Oshie to announce retirement

Retirement had been expected for Oshie at the time, though he still had one year remaining on his 8-year contract, that had a cap hit of $5.75M. It makes perfect sense then, that he'll be making the announcement now that his contact has expired.
The Stanley Cup champion Oshie was selected 24th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 2005 NHL draft. He finished his career having played 1010 regular season games with the Blues and the Capitals over 16 seasons, scoring 302 goals and 393 assists.
TJ further scored 34 goals and 35 assists in 106 playoff games, and won a Stanley Cup with the Washington Capitals in 2018, when he scored his career-best in the playoffs, 8 goals and 13 assists, in 24 games.
Oshie is also known for his performance in the 2014 Winter Olympic Games with the United States, where he scored 1 goal and 3 assists in 6 games, and was selected six times in the shoot-out for a 3-2 win in the preliminary rounds versus Russia, scoring 4 times.
It will certainly be a sentimental moment when Oshie takes to the stage on June 9 at the Washington harbor, when he'll stand before the same fans that have watched him play, and have cheered him on throughout the years, sentimental for both him and for the fans.
