The Washington Capitals are coming off a tough 5-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 4 of the 2025 NHL playoffs and now find themselves on the verge of elimination, trailing the series 3-1. As the team continues to struggle to find their footing, Tom Wilson is doing everything he can to stir things up - this time by mocking Carolina's signature postgame "Storm Surge" celebration.
Well, folks, Tom Wilson is back to his old tricks.
Honestly, at this point, he might be the only one who can still breathe some life into this painful series. The Washington Capitals need the version of Wilson that showed up in Round 1 against Montreal - the one who brought energy, grit, and timely scoring.
But so far this series, he's been quiet. Although the Caps' enforcer tried to light a fire under his team, the way he went about it this time was all wrong. Let's just say it's raising more eyebrows than providing momentum.
Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson mocks the Carolina Hurricanes "Storm Surge"
Wilson gave Staal a soft, nothingburger of a punch with his gloved hand. The 36-year-old Canes captain reacted by throwing his head back like a rock 'em, sock 'em robot meeting its fatal blow. While the scrum continued, Staal then threw a sucker punch at Wilson's head, which then sent the Capitals enforcer into Expressive Tom mode.
Then, Wilson sarcastically did the Canes' storm surge celebration, where the players clap around the faceoff circle together to celebrate victories.

As much as Tom Wilson may have though he was helping his team the whole episode came off as more cringe-worthy than impactful.
Hopefully, he shows up in Game 5 ready to lead by example - through his play, not through his antics.
