The Washington Capitals continued their historic week with a 5-4 shootout victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night and they clinched the top seed in the NHL's Eastern Conference
With the spot secured they now have home-ice advantage throughout the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Now having a 50-19-9 record with 109 points, the Capitals were the first team to clinch a playoff berth this season and with four games remaining, they sit just one point behind the Winnipeg Jets for the league's best record.
If they pass the Jets, Washington will claim the Presidents' Trophy for the fourth time in franchise history and the first since 2016-17.
The win adds to an already unforgettable stretch for the Capitals who are still riding high from
Alex Ovechkin's record-breaking 895th career goal on Sunday.
In passing Wayne Gretzky's long-standing mark of 894, Ovechkin became the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer and he even did it in one fewer game than The Great One.
While Alex Ovechkin will not catch Gretzky's career points total of 2,857, he now owns one of the league's most prestigious records and is confirming his place as one of the greatest players in hockey history.
This year for the Caps,
Dylan Strome has also showed that he can be a critical playmaker and was leading Washington in both assists with 51 and total points with 76.
Ovechkin follows with 69 points, while 23-year-old forward
Aliaksei Protas has enjoyed a breakout campaign and scored 30 goals and 36 assists for 66 points.
Tom Wilson who is known for his physical play has hit a new career high with 32 goals.
With their captain making history and their core playing very good, the Capitals are poised to make a deep run this spring and possibly bring the Stanley Cup back to D.C. once again.
