In a career already filled with historic milestones, Alex Ovechkin added another chapter Monday night and it was a big one for him.
The 39-year-old Washington Capitals captain scored the first overtime goal of his Stanley Cup Playoffs career and helped his team win over the Montreal Canadiens in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference First Round Stanley Cup playoffs.
The goal came 2:26 into sudden death and capped off a three-point night with 2 goals and 1 assist for Alex Ovechkin.
With the performance, Alex Ovechkin became the oldest player in NHL history to both score a playoff overtime goal and record three or more points in the same game.
At 39 years and 216 days old he then surpassed Boston Bruins legend
Jean Ratelle who held the record before him after scoring a hat trick in 1979 at age 38.
It took Ovechkin 152 career playoff games to get his first OT winner finally but it was worth the wait and the goal also marked his 73rd career playoff goal and extended his league-leading postseason point total among active players.
Alex Ovechkin was everywhere in Game 1, not just on the scoresheet and he delivered seven hits and logged over 20 minutes of ice time by setting the tone physically and offensively.
His opening goal late in the first period gave Washington the early lead and he also assisted on
Anthony Beauvillier's second-period goal before sealing the win in overtime.
Alex Ovechkin joins an elite group of Capitals to notch three or more points in a playoff OT win past the age of 30 with
Nicklas Backstrom, Peter Bondra and Dino Ciccarelli.
In a season full of records, the Great Eight just keeps adding more.
