The Lady Byng Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the payer adjudged to have 'exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability. Both Ovechkin and Thompson were considered for the honor in the 2024-25 season.

Now, the official, NHL description of the Lady Byng is quite a mouthful, which is only to say the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy is awarded to the league's classiest player, who also has talent.

Both Alex Ovechkin and Logan Thompson received votes, recognizing both as being quality individuals, on and off the ice. Ultimately, however, the trophy was presented to Los Angeles Kings' Anze Kopitar.

Anze Kopitar adds to the previous two Lady Byngs Trophies he won in 2016 and 2023, an award that is voted upon by the Professional Hockey Writers Association annually.
The Lady Byng is one of the few that Ovi doesn't have in his vast trophy case. He received two 1st-place votes, one 2nd-place vote, three 4th-place votes, and two 5th-place votes, and has one year left in which to do so.
Ovechkin completed the 20th NHL year of his career, 2024-25, with 44 goals in 65 games, his 14th 40-plus goals campaign; he received only 14 minutes in minor penalties this season.
Kopitar has now won 3 Lady Byng's, and is only the third this century to have won at least three - Pavel Datsyuk (4), and Martin St. Louis (3).
Brayden Point (793 points) and Jack Eichel (782 points), round out the top three vote-getters, while the top five were separated by only 200 points, making the margin one of the closest in NHL history, with Jakob Slavin (760 points) in 4th place, and Nick Suzuki (684 points) in 5th.
