Washington Capitals' management has already stated that they will not be making the kind of splash this season, that they did in the last offseason, though Washington does have areas of concern which need to be addressed, in particular secondary scoring.

According to Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravelli, one RFA is drawing a lot of attention from NHL GMs: JJ Peterka, for whom several offers were made at this year's trade deadline, and is being considered a potential offer sheet target.
How does an offer sheet work? If a player signs one, their current team has seven days to decide whether to match the offer sheet, or accept draft pick compensation based on the annual average value (AAV) of the offer sheet.
According to Capitals' writer Sammi Silber, for Washington, its 2026 3rd-round selection, it is only eligible to make an offer sheet with an AAV of $11,700,193, or more, which would cost four first-round picks over the next five drafts, starting in 2026.
Or the second option, an offer sheet with an AAV between $2,340,038 and $4,680,076, which would cost a 2026, 2nd-round pick.
The first, and higher option is not feasible given salary cap restraints, while the second, though feasible, could easily be matched, or improved upon by the team receiving the offer sheet, in Peterka's case, the Buffalo Sabres.
Yet, JJ Peterka is an interesting player with a huge upside, and has a scoring touch that all teams could use. The down side is that a player like Peterka will cost a number of high-end prospects and draft picks that Washington may not be willing to relinquish.
Referring back to the comment Chris Patrick made, that the Capitals will not be going crazy this offseason, given Peterka's price, it seems, at least with this player, that will likely be the case - Patrick will not be making a splash.
