The 18-year-old defenseman shared on Instagram Friday afternoon that he'll be returning for his sophomore season at Boston University. Hutson said he wants another shot at a national title after the Terriers reached the 2025 NCAA championship game but lost 6-2 to Western Michigan.

Cole Hutson has announced he's coming back to Boston University for his sophomore season to pursue his goal of winning a national championship.

Hutson posted this video on his Instagram Friday afternoon.
"Grateful for everything @terrierhockey has given me on and off the ice, The Fans, The @bu_dogpound , My Teammates, My Coaches and memories for a life time. It's time to chase an opportunity I've dreamed about my whole life. Another Chance to win a National Championship." -Hutson

Chris Cerullo from RMNB writes that Hutson wrapped up the 2024-25 season as the nation's top rookie, earning the 2025 Tim Taylor Award for NCAA Rookie of the Year. He was also the only freshman named to either the East or West First and Second Teams. In 39 games, he tallied 48 points (14 goals, 34 assists), leading all freshmen by six points and outscoring the next-best freshman defenseman by 22.
The Washington Capitals selected Hutson with the 43rd overall pick in the second round of the 2024 NHL Draft. They acquired that selection from the Buffalo Sabres in a trade that sent forward Beck Malenstyn the other way.
"To sign with the Caps this spring, Hutson would have needed to forego the rest of his college eligibility and likely start in the AHL with the Hershey Bears on an amateur tryout agreement." -Cerullo

Hutson will also be eligible to represent Team USA at the 2026 World Juniors, following his gold medal performance this past January, where he made history as the first defenseman to lead the tournament in points.
Cerullo also writes that Boston University is expected to be strong once again next season under head coach Jay Pandolfo. The Terriers will welcome several top-ranked recruits, including NHL draftees Jonathan Morello and Jack Pridham. They're also likely to retain key NHL prospects like Cole Eiserman, Aiden Celebrini, Mikhail Yegorov, and Brandon Svoboda, who are expected to return alongside Hutson for another run.
