Capitals prospect's younger brother wins major NHL award
Lane Hutson, brother of Washington Capitals prospect Cole Hutson, was awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy today, for NHL's best rookie.
Lane Hutson had an historic first season with the Montreal Canadiens and has proven it by winning the award for best freshman in the NHL.
The NHL posted an announcement on social media this morning, saying that Hutson's family gathered to surprise Lane with the Calder Memorial Trophy, which will be presented at the NHL Awards Ceremony before game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals on June 12, 6pm ET.
The 21 year-old defenseman impressed Habs fans by reaching several milestones for scoring by a rookie defenseman this season, helping Montreal to a playoff berth for the 1st time in four years.
Lane Hutson became the 4th d-man in the NHL's modern era (since 1943-44) to lead rookies in scoring, joining Bobby Orr (13-28-41) in 1966-67, Brian Leetch (23-48-71) in 1988-89, and
Quinn Hughes (8-45-53) in 2019-20.
Lane's 60 assists matched Larry Murphy's 1980-81 assists for most by a rookie defenseman in NHL history.
Lane is the older brother of Capitals prospect Cole Hutson, who was selected by Washington in the 2nd-round, 43rd overall, in the 2024 NHL draft.
Capitals' Cole Hutson was part of the US National Team Development program from 2022-24, and in 51 games recorded 37 points as a defenseman. In 2024-25 he played for Boston University, and recorded 48 points.
We congratulate Lane Hutson for his achievement. We have not heard the last of this stand-out defenseman.
