Could Tom Wilson earn the Captaincy when Alex Ovechkin leaves?
Capitals' leader Tom Wilson is the kind of player that brings to mind a quote: 'Wolves don't concern themselves with the opinion of sheep'. Despite having a career year in 2024-2025, Wilson is first and foremost a team player - a team first guy. Whatever he achieves personally, he does for the team's benefit.
Tom Wilson recorded career best in goals (33) and assist (33) in 81 games this season, with a plus/minus +10, all while leading the Washington Capitals with 233 hits and playing key minutes, averaging 18:44 minutes per game, also the highest of his career.
"When you need a spark, he's there to provide it. You need a big play, or a big goal, he's always the one doing it,"
Connor McMichael said. "Can't say enough good things."
Wilson was one of Washington's alternate captains this season and took that role seriously. He led the charge on and off the ice, and if his team struggled, he was there to set the tone for battle.
"He's the heart and soul of the organization, right?"
Logan Thompson said of his teammate. "When he's making big plays, big hits, we feed off that...We love him."
Yet, being the selfless player that he is, even the praise he receives is directed back to his teammates.
"It starts with Ovi," Wilson said. "He goes out there and sets the tone every night, and I've been able to learn a lot from him over the years and just willingness to give to the team. Try and take anything I can from a legend."
When Alex Ovechkin finally does retire from the Capitals, there is a better than good chance that Tom Wilson will be wearing the C on his chest, right next to his heart, and leading the charge for his team.
