Dream scenario for Washington Capitals revealed
Though the Washington Capitals were the top team in the Eastern Conference this season, they were nevertheless eliminated by the Canes in the 2nd-round of the playoffs. With the offseason heating-up and GM's busy filling roster spots, we look at the Dream Scenario for the Caps in the 2025 free agency market to help Ovi win another cup.
Ovechkin's future with the Caps has clearly been the team's biggest story this offseason, as he enters the final year of the 5-year contract he signed in 2021. It's possible he may not return, as many reports suggest.
Washington's projected salary cap space is $10M, according to Cap Space. However, they re-signed
Logan Thompson earlier this year, and
Jakob Chychrun during the offseason, reducing the projected cap space further.
Still, even with limited cap space, Caps could have a dream offseason.
The Capitals have players like Protas, McMichael and
Ryan Leonard who are becoming its core. But they need someone to lead the group as it develops. The top option for that role is
Mitch Marner, who would fit in nicely with Strome and Ovi.
When Ovi finally retires, Marner could be a formidable addition to a Protas, Beauvillier top line. At only 28, Marner could lead the Caps for years.
Nikolaj Ehlers is perhaps a more realistic choice. He can play opposite Ovi on the right wing, and move to the left when Ovi retires. At 29 years-old, Ehlers would be a solid bridge from the old guard to the new crew.
Anthony Beauvillier was brought in via trade at the trade deadline. Though he only played 18 games with the Caps in the regular season, he was excellent in the playoffs, and was tied for 3rd on the team with 6 playoff points.
Last summer, Beauvillier signed a one-year deal worth $1.25M AAV. His current value is expected to be $3M AAV, which would fit in nicely with Washington's cap-space situation. He must be re-signed.
Forward depth is key to any Caps success. McMichael and Leonard are under 25 years-old, but Mangiapane is 30, and a free agent; he should be replaced, if the 3rd-line hopes to have any kind of success.
Matt Duchene could be a high-value signing, coming off a 1 year deal worth $3M AAV.
