The Washington Capitals season is unfortunately over, but this season presented several moral victories for the team. One of the feel good stories that emerged this season was defenceman Matt Roy.
When the Washington first acquired Matt Roy from the Los Angeles Kings, we all knew he was going to be a nice addition to lineup.
That said, while his acquisition brought a ton of excitement to D.C., I think I speak for everyone when I say we didn't expect him to be this good on the blue line. This season, Matt Roy was an absolute revelation on the back end.
Matt Roy emerges as best one of the best defenders on the Washington Capitals
According to Stars and Sticks, in the postseason his corsi for percentage dipped to 40.99 percent, his expected goals for percentage was at 47.67 percent and his high danger chances for percentage was at 49.28 percent. Roy also had 113 blocked shots and 114 hits further proving his worth on the blue line. This was a good pickup by the Capitals last summer.
Roy finished the season with three goals and 21 assists for 24 points. He did it while suiting up in 69 games. He averaged 19:53 minutes of ice time. He also had a plus/minus of +18. Roy's advanced stats in the regular season included a corsi for percentage 48.77 percent, his expected goals for perecentage came out to 49.90 percent and his high danger chances for came out to 51.66 percent per Natural Stat Trick.
Although the Washington Capitals failed to get to the Eastern Conference this season, I fully anticipate the Washington Capitals to get there next season, and Matt Roy will be a big reason why.
