It wasn't a great game for either goalie on Friday night in Montreal, as both the Canadiens Sam Montembeault and Capitals Logan Thompson left Game 3 early after suffering leg injuries.
Montembeault, who gave up two goals on 13 shots, exited the game with 8:21 left in the second period following a discussion with Jim Ramsay, Montreal's director of sports medicine and performance, during a TV timeout.
Jakub Dobes came in to replace Montembeault, stopping seven of the eight shots he faced, securing Montreal's first win of the series in front of a wild and sold out Bell Centre atmosphere.
Montembeault had to go to the locker room. Dobes is now the Canadiens' goaltender, making his playoff debut.
Montreal quickly suited up emergency backup goalie Patrick Chevrefils after Montembeault exited. The Canadiens did not provide an update on Montembeault's condition, and coach Martin St. Louis also did not comment, though it seemed the goaltender was favoring his left leg.
Elias Edmonson from Habs Fanatics writes that Dr. Harjas Grewal, who previously predicted Patrik Laine's preseason injury and recovery timeline with impressive accuracy, has now shared his assessment of Samuel Montembeault's situation, offering insight into the nature of the injury and how long the Canadiens goalie could be out.
Here's what he said following Montembeault's injury.
Possibly Montembeault has a hamstring strain and that's why he's left the game
Hopefully it's more a cramp and he's potentially even back for the 3rd
Otherwise muscular strains can be quite variable and harder for goalies to compensate
