The Washington Capitals season is officially over, and GM Chris Patrick now looks to the offseason to make strategic adjustments to the roster.

It's no secret that the Washington Capitals are coming into the offseason with two prime objectives: upgrading the 3C position and adding youth to the roster.
But what about on defence?

Insider claims Washington Capitals could add defenceman in the offseason

Overall, the Washington Capitals defensive core played respectably over the course of the 2024-25 season.
While members of the blue-line performed at a high level, there are some question marks beginning to arise.
Veteran defenceman John Carlson will be eligible for a contract extension in July, but Chris Patrick made it clear he's not rushing the process by any means.
Additionally, Martin Fehervary suffered a season ending knee injury towards the end of the regular season, and there's no clear indication whether he'll be ready by the fall.
Alex Alexeyev could also find himself on a new team, especially considering the offseason drama he made headlines for just weeks ago.
Sammi Silberfrom DC Backcheck writes that adding another blueliner to the mix gives the Capitals some needed depth and insurance in that position. Washington has defensive prospects that pack a lot of promise, but an NHL-ready rearguard could be what the team needs to get over the hurdle.
There are some interesting names set to hit the free agent market, including right-handers Henri Jokiharju (a younger option) and Jani Hakanpaa (a veteran), though D.C. needs to be conscious of ice time and role when it comes to choosing what kind of player joins the mix.
Will the Washington Capitals be adding a defenceman this offseason? Time will tell.
