After a historic season, the Washington Capitals emerged as one of the biggest surprises during the 2024-25 NHL season. Despite being eliminated in the second round of the playoffs, all signs point towards another great campaign next season. While the Caps' have shown significant improvements, Matt Larkin from Daily Face off doesn't seem convinced the Capitals success will carry over next season.
I think it's safe to say that no one expected the Washington Capitals to be this good in 2024-25.
After barely squeaking into the post season the year prior, the Capitals showed the NHL this season they're true cup contenders.
Despite their fairytale run this season, prominent insiders around the league don't see this happening again.
Daily Face Off claims Washington Capitals will regress next season
Recently, the boys over at daily Face Off discussed which teams eliminated in the second-round will likely regressed, and the Washington Capitals mad made the list.
Each of the clubs eliminated - the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals and Winnipeg Jets - enjoyed a strong season. But which of the Round 2 loser teams are you most worried about for 2025-26?
MATT LARKIN: It's the Washington Capitals for me. Everything about their tremendous season screams regression to me. I count eight or nine players on the 2024-25 team who had career years. Can we depend on all of
Pierre-Luc Dubois,
Jakob Chychrun,
Dylan Strome and even
Logan Thompson to be this good again? I do think the Caps are going to be OK long-term, as they have an impressive prospect crop, led by
Ryan Leonard,
Cole Hutson and
Andrew Cristall. But I see them taking a step backward from their 111-point season, probably by 10-15 points, in 2025-26.
