Looking Back at the Washington Capitals and Detroit Red Wings Trade from 33 Years Ago Today
Dino Ciccarelli was coming off a 38 goal 38 assists campaign for the Washington Capitals leading the Capitals in scoring, but after Washington lost in 7 games to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first-round changes needed to happen.
Off the ice issues for Dino Ciccarelli also helped lead to the Washington Capitals cutting ties with the right wing.
Dino Ciccarelli would finish his storied career in 1999 with the Florida Panthers. In 2010 Ciccarelli would be elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Kevin Miller is the younger brother of Kelly Miller who would go on to have a long career with the Washington Capitals. Kevin Miller despite being traded to play alongside his older brother had a pretty brief tenure in Washington.
After only 10 games for the Washington Capitals, Kevin Miller would be traded away to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for defensemen Paul Cavallini.
Cavallini who had started his career in Washington before a 1987 trade to the St. Louis Blues would only spend the rest of the 1992-1993 season with the Washington Capitals before being shipped off to the Dallas Stars in exchange for future considerations.
Those future considerations would eventually became Enrico Ciccone.
Looking back at the 1992 Dino Cicarelli trade
In 1994 the Washington Capitals would ship Ciccone to the Tampa Bay Lightning in part of a deal that brought defensemen Joe Reekie to Washington. Reekie would be a key piece of the Capitals defense until the 2001-2002 season.
Joe Reekie would then be traded to the Chicago Blackhawks for the final 17 games of his career for Petr Dvorak who was a Czech prospect who never made it to the NHL.
As far as Kevin Miller, he would play professional hockey between the NHL and minors until the 2004-05 season. Miller would go on to have 150 goals, and 185 assists in his 620 NHL games.
