A Potential Free Agent Signing has decided to remain with his current club
The Washington Capitals have missed out on a Star Player who has decided to remain with his current club for 2026 and beyond. A potential piece to the puzzle for the Metropolitan division champions is off the table as the Dallas Stars have resigned one of their own.
Matt Duchene has played the past two seasons with those Dallas Stars after the Nashville Predators surprisingly bought out his contract following the 2022-23 season. Most likely due to his goal production going down from 43 goals in 2021 to 22 goals for the Predators in 2023-24.
Matt Duchene signs an extension to remain with the Stars
While not matching his production from that 2021-2022 season, Matt Duchene proved to be productive since then in his two years in Dallas.
A season ago Duchene would have 25 goals and 40 assists in 80 games, and this past season was able to play a full 82 game season notching 30 goals with 52 helpers. In 18 playoff games this past postseason Matt Duchene would light the lamp once to go along with 5 assists.
The signing will leave the Dallas Stars with less than $500,000 left in cap space with 17 players under contract. Look for the Dallas Stars to make some moves in the offseason to stay under the cap as they try to reload next season following their five-game ouster in the Western Conference finals by the Edmonton Oilers.
As far as potential targets for the Washington Capitals in free agency, Matt Duchene's Dallas Stars teammates
Jamie Benn and
Mikael Granlund could be available free agents that most likely will not be back in Dallas due to the Stars salary cap situation.
If the price is right maybe the Washington Capitals will consider making a move once free agency begins on July 1st.
