The Washington Capitals are looking to add elite talent to their roster over the offseason, and an amazing opportunity has just fallen on GM Chris Patrick's lap. According to sources, Winnipeg Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers will be testing the market as a free agent, and the Washington Capitals would be a prime destination for the Danish superstar.

It's no secret that the Washington Capitals were heavily outmatched in the second round against the Carolina Hurricanes, particularly on the offence.
During his end-of-season press conference, GM Chris Patrick made it clear he's willing to be aggressive this offseason, even hinting at a potential big swing if the right opportunity presented itself - and that opportunity might just be Nikolaj Ehlers.

Washington Capitals could land Nikolaj Ehlers

Nikolaj Ehlers has been a fan favourite for the Jets faithful since being drafted 9th overall in 2015. Although he has yet to notch a 30+ goal season in the league, Ehlers have always posed as an electric offensive player capable of generating timely goals and dazzling plays.
There have been rather public reports out of Winnipeg that Ehlers won't be re-upping with the organization and will immediately become one of the top trade options available this offseason.
The native of Aalborg, Denmark excels in passing the puck but also regularly puts up some of the best possession numbers in the game.
Per AFP Analytics, Ehlers is expected to cash in this summer. With the NHL's salary cap set to increase exponentially, his next contract is likely to be around a six-year, $48.6 million commitment ($8.11 million AAV). The closest contract comparables for Ehlers are the 8-year, $70 million extension Travis Konecny signed with the Philadelphia Flyers last July and the 8-year, $56 million extension Gabriel Landeskog signed with the Colorado Avalanche in July of 2021.
