New York Rangers emerging as frontrunners for Capitals' top UFA
The NHL offseason is right around the corner and general managers across the league are gearing up for what should be an entertaining free agent frenzy. One team looking to make a big splash this offseason is the New York Rangers, who are coming off a disappointing year after missing the playoffs - just one season removed from a trip to the Eastern Conference Final.
General manager Chris Drury might have the toughest offseason out of any NHL team.
The New York Rangers fanbase won't tolerate another year out of Stanley Cup contention, and the organization is expected to make strategic moves in the coming weeks to get back on track.
That said, GM Chris Drury is looking at the Washington Capitals to sccop up some affordable, yet impactful skill.
Andrew Mangiapane listed as prime candidate for the New York Rangers
According to Nova Caps, The 29-year-old played all over Washington's lineup and ended with 14 goals, 28 points, and a .5338 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage in 81 games. Mangiapane tallied a goal and an assist in Washington's postseason run. With the team looking for roster room to integrate a few prospects, Mangiapane will likely hit the unrestricted free agent market.
As per Rangers Insider, The New York Rangers have attempted to find a comparable winger to Pavel Buchnevich in free agency, and just haven't been able to find some who could replace his production. Reilly Smith was the latest experiment that fell flat on its face as GM Chris Drury gave up draft capital for the underachieving winger.
While Mangiapane proved to be a solid depth piece in DC, I don't anticipate general manager bringing him back, and the Rangers could a a greta landing spot to breathe life back into his game.
