News of Alex Ovechkin's return to Russia sparks debate on Reddit

Debate about Alex Ovechkin's final NHL season continued all over social media yesterday, in particular on Reddit, where several comments were made with respect to Nastya Oveckina's confirmation that her husband would be retiring to Moscow.
Nastya Ovechkina earlier in the week revealed the family's plan to return to Russia, once Alex Ovechkin's contract expires. This prompted varied reaction on Reddit, with some debating Ovi's political affiliations, and his support for Vladimir Putin, according to the Times of India.
It seems the news about Ovechkin's possible departure for Russia following the 2025-26 NHL season wasn't made in a media presser, or team announcement, but was revealed, instead, in an off-hand interview with his wife, who said Ovechkin would return to Moscow when his contract ended.

Many on Reddit made their feelings known about Ovechkin's news, in particular about Ovechkina's confirmation of their move to Russia.
"Alexander still has a contract for a year," Nastya Ovechkina said. "So we will paly the next season and then fly back to live in Moscow, our homeland. We will stay in Russia, yes."
The debate about where Alexander Ovechkin will play in 2026-27 has been a topic of great debate since the 2024-25 NHL season ended, with unofficial confirmations being made on both sides of the debate - will or will he not play in Russia when he retires in the NHL?
It seems the debate on social media will continue to rage-on, until Ovechkin himself comments about his future, which may not happen once the 2025-26 season is under way.
Once the puck drops, Ovi will place a moratorium on questions about his future, as it would most certainly be a source of distraction, in my opinion, for himself and the Washington Capitals.
