The longtime Washington Capitals center has listed his stunning Northern Virginia estate for $14,999,995.

The 7-bedroom, 12-bathroom mansion, that is spanning over 16,000 square feet just hit the market earlier this week as first reported by DC Urban Turf and confirmed via Zillow.
Nicklas Backstrom purchased the newly built home in 2021 for $8.5 million and while the move isn't officially linked to his hockey future, the timing is raising questions.
Nicklas Backstrom's contract with the Washington Capitals is set to expire this summer and the 37-year-old spent the entire 2024-2025 season on long-term injured reserve.
He last appeared in a game on October 29 in 2023 just before stepping away from the team due to lingering complications from a surgically repaired hip.
Being one of the greatest playmakers in franchise history, Nicklas Backstrom leads all Washington Capitals players in career assists and ranks second only to Alex Ovechkin in total points.
But after 17-season NHL career that he all spent in Washington, his retirement seems increasingly likely and Backstrom already owns a luxurious waterfront villa in Gävle in Sweden that has been built in 2010.
In a 2021 interview with Aftonbladet, he shared his love for the property by saying,
«I actually dreamed about this when I was young, about living by the water and having a jet ski and being able to enjoy the summer,»

Nicklas Backstrom and his wife Liza who are married since 2022 have three children.
The two daughters Haley and Alizee, and a son Vince and the family frequently returns to Sweden during the offseason and this time, it may be for good.
As one chapter potentially closes in D.C., another may be opening across the Atlantic.
