Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin snubbed from Bill Masterton Trophy nomination.
Despite his storied career, the Masterton Trophy remains one of the few individual honors that has eluded the 39-year-old Ovechkin.
Chris Cerullo from RMNB writes that Ovechkin tallied 73 points (44 goals, 29 assists) over 65 games this season. He opened the year with an impressive 15 goals in his first 18 outings before suffering a broken left leg in November, the first major injury of his career. Remarkably, he missed just 16 games and returned to the lineup only 40 days later.
"Despite missing a total of 17 games at year's end, Ovechkin still managed to score the 42 goals he needed to break Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record. In his 20th season in the NHL, Ovechkin finished tied for third in goals scored (44), with only
William Nylander (45) and
Leon Draisaitl (52) ahead of him." -Cerullo
The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy was introduced by the NHL Writers' Association in 1968 to honor the memory of Bill Masterton, a Minnesota North Stars player known for his exceptional perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.
The announcements of NHL Trophy finalists for the 2025 NHL Awards continue on Monday, May 5, with the reveal of the three Calder Memorial Trophy finalists.
The winners will be announced at the annual NHL Awards on June 27 live from Vegas.
