Pittsburgh Penguins surprise Alexander Ovechkin, honour him with standing ovation

Midway through the first period, the Pittsburgh Penguins surprised everyone by honouring Alexander Ovechkinwith a congratulatory message on the jumbotron.

In a classy display of sportsmanship, the fans followed with a standing ovation for the legendary Capitals captain.

Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin have now gone head-to-head 73 times, and until now, Ovechkin had never received even a hint of recognition or respect inside the Igloo.

After breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time scoring record, even Penguins fans had to tip their cap to Alexander Ovechkin's incredible achievement.
You could see how much the moment meant to Ovi, as he took a brief victory lap to salute the Pittsburgh crowd-- a gesture that gave chills to all Caps' fans watching.

Despite the fierce rivalry between the Capitals and Penguins over the last two decades, it was a classy and memorable moment to see a rival fanbase rise to honour one of the game's greats.

While this was a great moment between two arch rivals, the Washington Capitals will look to end their season on a high note.

Regardless, it's moments like these that remind us why we love hockey.
