TJ Oshie is retiring from hockey after a 16-year career, 9 of which were spent with the Washington Capitals, with whom he became a Stanley Cup-winning hero.
Oshie made the tear-filled announcement at the Washington Harbor on Monday, the 7th anniversary of the Capitals players swimming in the fountains at the Georgetown waterfront, after winning the Stanley Cup two days earlier.
TJ Oshie holds back tears
"Both emotional in different ways," Oshie said of the two occasions so far (swimming in the fountains), "there's been a lot less alcohol. But it really comes full circle."
TJ's retirement seemed like a foregone conclusion since the end of last season, because of a chronic back injury that placed him on the LTIR and forced him to miss the entire 2024-25 season.
"Actually, saying the word (retirement) out loud at the podium with my family in front of me and the Caps organization," Oshie added, "and my teammates, all my close friends, it was emotional. I'm so glad it's over."
In attendance were Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery, GM Chris Patrick, president Brian MacLellan, and teammates Carlson, and Backstrom.
Oshie was joined at the new conference by his wife Lauren, daughters Lyla, Leni and Lucy, son Campbell, and his mother Tina, sisters Tawni and Aleah, and his brother Tayler.
Oshie became very sentimental talking about his family, in particular his late father, Tim, who died in 2021 after battling Alzheimer's disease, and about his teammates Backstrom, Wilson and Ovi.
Then he became a little more jovialas he recalled past shenanigans from 2018.
"We were sitting right up here maybe," Oshie said. "And that's when I decided we should start doing the keg stands, or cup stands, as we called it, and made sure Ovi went first."
As we now know, it would not be the last challenge in which Ovi would finish 1st.
