Alexander Ovechkin made history yesterday, scoring his 895th NHL career goal, breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time scoring record. That said, Ovechkin's good friend and teammate Tom Wilson received the honours of assisting the historic goal and got emotional during his post-game interview.

The legendary pursuit came to a thrilling end yesterday, as Alexander Ovechkin fired in his 895th career goal, beating New York Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin.
Although the Washington Capitals fell by a score of 4-1, the defeat felt secondary as the spotlight remained firmly on Ovechkin, with everyone overjoyed for his historic achievement.
After the game, Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson made himself available to the media, where he delivered an emotional statement about his captain.

"It's just an honor to be living through this and to see this," Wilson said.

"I mean, it makes me a little bit emotional just because I think so much of him," Wilson said following the 4-1 loss that feels like nothing more than a sidenote on a record-breaking day in NHL history.

"To be able to be beside him forever on a big goal, I feel very lucky. I feel very honored to be a part of that. It's not about me at all. I'm just really proud. I love that guy. I love his family. I'm really happy for him."

"He's taken us on an amazing journey," Wilson said. "It'll be the honor of my career to play with 'O', learn so much from him, win with him, watch him score this goal. There are really no words to describe it."

It's clear just how much Ovechkin means to his teammates, and their genuine reaction is a testament to his leadership.
As the dust finally settles on "The Gr8 Chase", the Washington Capitals can focus on getting back in the win column.
With the 2025 NHL postseason just two weeks away, the team now shifts it's focus to the pursuit of another Stanley Cup.
More details to follow.
