The NHL's 32nd franchise revealed its new name on Wednesday: the Utah Mammoth.
Frank Seravalli from the Daily Faceoff writes that NHL commissioner Gary Bettman will join Ryan and Ashley Smith, owners of Smith Entertainment Group, in Salt Lake City today for the official unveiling, marking the end of a 13-month branding process led by fan input.
Meet the Utah Mammoth, permanent name and identity of #NHL's newest franchise - formerly #UtahHC.
Inside the fan-driven branding process which spanned 850,000 votes, came together in 13 months and includes a few juicy easter eggs. #TusksUp
Here's what team owners Ryan and Ashley Smith had to say when making the announcement on Wednesday.
«We love the passion of the people of Utah and the way they showed up for the team during its inaugural season and the energy they brought to voting on its permanent identity. From day one, we committed that this team would be built with and for the people of Utah, and we are excited to celebrate today's launch with the entire state." -Ryan and Ashley Smith
Seravalli also writes that Utah's inaugural color scheme of Black Rock, Salt White, and Mountain Blue, will stay in place, along with the original striping from their first-year jerseys. The Mountain Mammoth logo will feature on the Black Rock home jersey, while the Salt White away jersey will proudly display 'U-T-A-H' across the chest, ensuring there's no doubt about the Mammoth's origins in visiting arenas.
"There are a number of easter eggs hidden within the Mammoth's new identity. The team says the Mammoth logo 'captures the fierce power of the mammoth mid-charge, tusks up and ready to attack.' The nearby Wasatch Mountain Range's snow-capped peaks forms the Mammoth's crown. The outline of Utah is subtly embedded in the mountain silhouette and the curved tusk is in the shape of a 'U' for Utah." -Seravalli
The team revealed that Mammoth was the 'clear favorite' and the 'prevailing choice' among the 850,000 votes cast. They emphasized that the branding process was meant to be a 'two-way conversation with our fans' and moved swiftly, completing it in less than two years, far quicker than the typical NHL branding process, which usually involves many league stakeholders.
"There is undoubtedly a great historical significance that connects the Mammoth to Utah. Fossils of Mammoths, which weighed up to 22,000 pounds, have been found throughout Utah in Bear Lake, Park City and most notably Huntington Canyon, where a complete skeleton was discovered in 1988." -Seravalli
Utah Mammoth draftees at next month's NHL Draft will be the first to sport the team's new uniforms. The Mammoth were among the big winners in this week's Draft Lottery, rising from the No. 14 to the No. 4 overall pick, an exciting development for a franchise already rich with prospects.
