The Washington Capitals are fresh off one of their best regular seasons in years, and a big part of that success comes from the work of their coaching staff. While head coach Spencer Carbery deserves a lot of the credit, assistant coach Mitch Love has made such an impact that other NHL teams are now eyeing him for a potential head coaching role in the offseason.

According to TSN insider Pierre LeBrun, six NHL teams are "generating interest" in the Washington Capitals assistant coach.

It's no secret that NHL coaching jobs tend to come with an expiration date. The league has always been a revolving door when it comes to bench bosses, but that constant turnover opens new doors for the next wave of coaches to step in and leave their mark.
Love has guided the Capitals' defense corps for two years after the Caps lured him away from the Calgary Flames' AHL affiliate. The 40-year-old former AHL enforcer (he fought a career high 34 times in 2008-09) led the Stockton Heat and Calgary Wranglers to a combined 96-33-11 record from 2021 through 2023, winning the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award as Coach of the Year both seasons.

According to Pierre LeBrun, Mitch Love could be on his way out to seek out bigger opportunities in the NHL.
«Assistant coach Mitch Love, a two-time AHL coach of the year, is generating interest,» LeBrun writes. «We'll see where that goes once the Caps' season is over.»

After making a name for himself with the AHL's Calgary Wrangles, it's no surprise that Mitch Love is drawing attention from general managers looking for the next "Spencer Carbery."
That said, if Love decides to move on for a bigger opportunity, there's no doubt the fan base would support him 100%.
For now, though, Mitch Love remains locked in on helping the Capitals push toward the Eastern Conference Finals.
