Well, the update we've all been waiting for is finally upon us. Just now, the Washington Capitals confirmed that the 2025-26 season will be Alex Ovechkin's last one in the NHL.

The Capitals sent an email to season ticket holders saying 2025-2026 will be Alex Ovechkin's FINAL year in the NHL.

Unfortunately for Washington Capitals fans, the end of an era has finally come.
While there have been offseason rumblings of Alexander Ovechkin potentially closing out his career in his home country, those rumours have officially been put to rest.

Alexander Ovechkin officially returning next season

After a historic season in 2024-25, Alexander Ovechkin will return for one last ride into the sunset.
According to sources, (one year, $9.5 million remaining on contract; no-movement clause) - Despite missing 17 games, Ovechkin, who will turn 40 on September 17, tied Buffalo Sabres center Tage Thompson for third in the NHL with 44 goals and led Washington with an average of 1.12 points-per-game (73 in 65).
Ovechkin will almost certainly become the first player ever to score 900 career goals in October and it is awfully tough to imagine him doing it in any other jersey. The 2025-26 season will be Ovechkin's last in the NHL.
Last year, Ovechkin made history by shattering Wayne Gretzky's all-time scoring record, but fell shy of a Stanley Cup championship as the Caps' lost in the second round to the Carolina Hurricanes.
With a boat load of talented prospects set to make the jump to the pro level, GM Chris Patrick also has the opportunity to elevate his team with a strategic trade this offseason.
As it stands, I fully expect Chris Patrick to make a big splash this summer to bolster his team as much as possible for Alex Ovechkin's final season sporting the red and blue.
More details coming soon...
