The Washington Capitals were dealt a decisive loss last night against the Carolina Hurricanes, falling by a score of 5-1. Last night's game marked the tail-end of a back-to-back matchup, and fatigue appeared to be a factor in the disappointing loss. That said, things got out of control late in the third period, and forward Pierre-Luc Dubois gave fans insight into the chaos.
From the get-go, the Washington Capitals looked fatigued and out of sync.
After a string of undisciplined penalties in the first period, the Capitals found themselves down 3-0, and the game was over from there.
Fast forward to the third period, the Capitals were down 5-1, resulting in tensions to boil over on both sides.
A chaotic sequence led to multiple physical altercations, overwhelming the referees, who missed several blatant calls.
Pierre-Luc Dubois explains last night's chaos
Following last night's 5-1 loss,
Pierre Luc-Dubois made himself available to the media, providing insight as to what went wrong.
«In a game like this, there is frustration,» says Caps center P-L Dubois. «And when guys go unpunished for dirty plays, dirty slashing, the ref is a bit overwhelmed and missed some key, key things that happen, and then frustration takes over. It's an emotional sport, and like I said, when guys don't get punished by the referees - and I don't know, maybe they didn't see anything - the frustration takes over. And then that happens.»

Obviously, there's only so much the referees can do. However, Pierre-Luc Dubois believes several malicious plays by the Hurricanes were left unchecked, ultimately forcing the Capitals to take matters into their own hands.
While no disciplinary action was dished out by NHL Player and Safety, there's clearly no love lost between these two organizations.
Regardless, if these two titans clash in the 2025 playoffs, fans can expect an absolute showdown.
