Washington Capitals front office made a massive mistake regarding Alex Ovechkin
Earlier today, the Washington Capitals have sent an email to their ticket holders with a rather disappointing announcement, that 2025-26 is Alex Ovechkin's final season with the team.
Though it may not have come as a surprise to many, given the widespread speculation since the 2024-25 season ended, it is nonetheless sad news, given the impact the almost-40 year-old Russian has made on both the Capitals and across the NHL.
In a new development, the Capitals confirm the email was mistake and apologized for confusion.
The Caps' email to the ticket holders read: OCTOBER - the start of Capitals hockey and Alex Oveckin's FINAL NHL SEASON.
Ovi accomplished one of the greatest feats possible in hockey by breaking one of Wayne Gretzky's records, perhaps the biggest. On April 26, 2025, The GR8 scored goal 895 of his career, passing The Great One for most in the NHL.
In addition, Ovechkin's 1633 points rank 11th in the NHL, 6864 shots 1st, 3744 hits for 3rd most, and has won a Stanley Cup, 1 Conn Smythe Trophy, 3 Hart and Ted Lindsey Trophies and 9 Rocket Richard Trophies, making him, without a doubt, the greatest scorer in NHL history.
Alex Ovechkin was selected first overall in the 2004 NHL draft, and debuted in 2005 following an NHL lockout. As a rookie, he would score 52 goals and 106 points, declaring to the world that he had arrived, and winning the Calder for Rookie of the Year, by beating finalists
Sidney Crosby, and Dion Phaneuf.
Some in social media argue that the Capitals email is a marketing ploy intended to sell tickets for next season, as Ovi himself has not confirmed where he will play 2025-26, the speculation being that Ovi could play next season for Dynamo Moscow of the KHL.
It will certainly be clearer closer to training camp.
