The Washington Capitals season is unfortunately done, but this year has given fans so many reasons to be excited. One of those reasons was Alexander Ovechkin, who shattered Wayne Gretzky's all-time scoring record.

Let's face it - no one truly believed Wayne Gretzky's all-time scoring record would fall.
895 goals in at the NHL level is almost unfathomable, but Alexander Ovechkin achieved the incredible milestone, cementing himself as the leagues best goal scorer.
Funny enough, Wayne Gretzky always had a hung about Ovechkin.
Gretzky revealed on the Kelce Brothers' New Heights podcast earlier this week that «The Goal» against the Phoenix Coyotes on January 16, 2006, was the moment he realized that his record was no longer safe.

«Somebody asked me the other day, they said, 'When did you realize Ovechkin had a chance to break your record?'» Gretzky told the Kelces. «And I said, 'When I was coaching against him, I think his first year, he went through the whole team twice and scored on his rear end, on his back.'»

«That's what makes sports wonderful, right?» Gretzy said. «You think, 'Oh my God, can we get any better?' Then another guy comes along and you go, 'Wow, that guy's phenomenal.' Every sport's the sameI just have so much respect for so many of these athletes that come along now. As a fan, I just love it.»

Wayne Gretzky handled the entire situation with such class and professionalism.
After Alex Ovechkin tied the record, Wayne Gretzky even teased Ovi about buying him a new car if he broke the record, and I fully expect "The Great One" to live up to his end of the bargain.
More details to follow.
