Most fans and players alike would argue that anything short of winning the Stanley Cup is a failed season; that there is no prize for second-place, or third, for that matter. This is only somewhat true for the Washington Capitals, who will not be hoisting the Stanley Cup in 2025, after losing to the Carolina Hurricanes in the semi-finals of the Eastern Conference Playoffs.
"Not many people thought we were going to get this far at the beginning of the year,"
said Dylan Strom post-game. Washington was, in fact, only one goal away from winning game 5, and were the better team for long stretches of the 3rd period. But the Canes, with the help of goalie Freddie Anderson, would ultimately go on to win 3-1, with their second, and winning goal, beating
Logan Thompson with only 1:59 remaining in the contest. Again close, but no close enough.
Yet, despite their season having ended in a heartbreak loss, there was still much to celebrate in 2025, Washington's 50th year in the NHL, and much for which to look forward.
DC finished first in an Eastern Conference that housed many of the NHL's big-name teams, including the Florida Panthers, the reigning Stanley Cup Champs. And Alex Ovechkin, at the age of thirty-nine. finished third in goal scoring, only nine goals from winning his tenth Rocket Richard Trophy for most goals scored in a season. Again close, but not close enough.
Most importantly, however, we witnessed something we may never see again, that may possibly never be achieved again, not by a current, or any future player: The breaking of the record for all-time goals in the NHL, spectacularly broken by The Great8 himself, in a league in which the world's best hockey players flash their talent, and a record which currently stands at 897 goals.
Years from now we may not recall who won the Stanley Cup in any given year, but we will certainly remember the holder of arguably the most important NHL record, certainly the most difficult to surpass.
So we look forward to the future and next year's squad.
"A lot of us are here for the future and for a while, something to build on,"
said
Dylan Strome. And the future is bright for the Washington Capitals moving forward. Ovechkin has one year remaining on his current contract, which most experts confirm he will play out. And any team that has the likes of the The Great8 on their side...well, let's just say they are that much better off for it.
