Martin Fehervary's season in review

Sometimes, a player's effectiveness to his team is not always obvious when looking at his stats, as was the case with Capitals defenseman Martin Fehervary. He was mostly overlooked for most of the 2024-25 season, until he became indispensable when he wasn't available to play.

As per RMNB's Attributes Card, Fehervary scored: Strength 5, Intelligence 3, Speed 9, Endurance 7, Personality 5 and Luck 2.
The smooth-skating defenseman scored 5 goals in 2024-25, adding 20 assists in 81 games, while playing 19 minutes per appearance as the 4th defense-pairing.
Martin's Isolated Impact rating by HockeyViz shows he had a -1% GF/60, and a +1% xGA/60, while on the penalty kill he rated a +4% xGA/60. What does this all mean? Well, most of Fehervary's shots from the point and slot in the O-zone got through to the net, and he was an effective defender in the D-zone, managing to keep most of the opposition's shots to the outside.
According to Player Card by All Three Zones, Fehervary's strengths were in the D-zone, as a stay-at-home defenseman, and when paired with a puck-possession D-partner. He had strong scores in entry attempts/60, recovered dump-ins/60, pressure/60 and successful exits/60.
In the offensive zone, Marin's highest scores were shots/60, deflection assists/60, and cycle and forecheck offense/60. In the neutral zone, his only positive scores were zone entries/60 and entries with chances/60.
RMNB conducted an open survey and asked readers, 'On a scale of 1-5, how HAPPY are you to have Martin Fehervary on the team. Martin scored a very good 4.1 average.
For the most part, Martin's season's stats were not overly impressive, though they did show that he did his job in the d-zone and wasn't a liability.
The magic happened, however, when Martin was paired with Matt Roy in December. Suddenly Washington had an effective shut-down pair to call upon when under pressure, freeing-up time for the likes of John Carlson to play his optimal style of hockey.
Yet, Martin's value to the team was mostly felt when he was injured on April 15 on Long Island, and was sidelined for the remainder of the season. His absence marked an obvious decline at his position when his replacement Alexeyev couldn't perform at the same level of effectiveness on the shut-down role.
Now currently in rehab, it should be interesting to see if Fehervary is available for the puck-drop next season.
