Colorado defenseman Cale Makar awarded 2024-25 Norris Memorial Trophy
The NHL announced this morning that Cale Makar was voted the 2024-25 Norris Memorial Trophy winner, for defenseman who best demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-around ability in that position.
The NHL made the announcement on social media, adding that Makar received 176 of the 191 first-place votes, as voted by the Professional Hockey Writers Association.
Cale Marak wins Norris Trophy
With his 2nd Norris, Cale Makar joins the likes of superstars Bobby Orr (8), Dennis Potvin (3), Paul Coffey, Rod Langway, and
Erik Karlsson as the 6th player in NHL history to receive multiple Norris Trophies before the age of 27.
Makar is also the only player to finish in the top-3 of Norris Trophy voting every year since 2020-21. H's on a trajectory, in fact, to becoming the best ever d-man since Bobby Orr took the NHL by storm in 1966.
A Calgary, Alberta native, Cale's 92 points (30g, 62a) in 80 games played are 1st among all blueliners, including 1st in points and assists, and broke his franchise record for most goals and points in a season.
Makar is the 1st the NHL d-man to hit the 30 goals mark since 2008-09, when Mike Green of the Capitals scored 31 goals. Makar's 92 points make him the 5th defenseman all-time to post consecutive 90-point seasons, and the 1st since Paul Coffey to record 30-plus goals and 60-plus assists.
Yes, you can certainly see where all this is going. At the age of 23, Makar became the youngest d-man in 52 years to win the Conn Smythe Trophy, and just the 3rd overall to do so at the age of 23, or younger.
Cale Makar also won the Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche. This most recent Norris is likely not his last, as the Colorado phenom seems to be just entering his prime.
We congratulate Cale Makar on his achievement.
