Former Washington Capitals head coach could land major new deal in Russia
Former Washington head coach Todd Reirden could be going overseas to his next big coaching endeavour. According to sources, Reirden is rumoured to be a prime candidate as the next head coach of the KHL's Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.
Now for those who aren't familiar with Todd Reirden, he served as the Washington Capitals head coach from 2018 to 2020. He was the Barry Trotz successor after the Caps glorious Stanley Cup Run - pretty big shoes to fill, to say the least.
Now, bigger opportunities potentially await him in Russia.
Todd Reirden interviewing for head coaching job in Russia
According to Metaratings' Dmitry Levin, the former Washington Capitals head coach is one of the candidates for the open bench boss job at KHL club Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. Reirden and the most recent Gagarin Cup champions are reportedly already in the contract negotiation phase.
Reirden has been out of a job since the Pittsburgh Penguins dismissed him from his role as associate coach in May of 2024. He had been rumored to become head coach of the KHL's Avangard Omsk last season but pulled out at the last second, citing family circumstances.

While Reirden failed to get through the first round of the postseason in both his years as the Caps' head coach, he did prove himself rather capable.
In both of his seasons as head coach of the Washington Capitals, Todd Reirden led the team to first place in the Metropolitan Division, but was unable to guide them past the early playoff rounds.
While no decisions have been made regarding Reirden's future, it's looking like the KHL will be his next big-time coaching gig.
