Capitals could be a great landing spot for Brock Boeser
The Vancouver Canucks made every attempt to trade Brock Boeser at this year's trade deadline, but ultimately decided to keep their 28 year-old star. He is now set to become a free agent on July 1st.
With Alex Ovechkin's contract set to expire at the end of next season, and with sno word from him whether he'll sign again with the Caps, the team must consider every option to replace his scoring production - Boeser is one such option.
Brock Boeser told Sportsnet that he doesn't consider it very likely' that he'll be back with the Canucks next year.
"Honestly, it's unlikely at this point," Boeser had said. "It sucks, it's unfortunate. I'm was just trying to play good hockey, and then I'll worry. We all know it's been a roller-coaster of a year."
Boeser scored 25 goals and 25 assists in 71 games this season with the Canucks, and was a -24 in plus/minus, the worst of his career. Considering that he scored career highs in goals and points (40g, 73a, +23) in 2023-24, this last one was disappointing.
Brock Boeser has scored 23 or more goals in 7 of his 9 seasons in the NHL, and has averaged 65 points per 82 games in his career. But, he is not a very good defender, perhaps the biggest knock on the forward.
The Vancouver Canucks finished the season 36-29-13, and missed the playoffs for the fourth time in five seasons. Losing Boeser to free agency will force Vancouver to test the market themselves in order to replace Brock's production, or choose to promote from within.
With July 1st fast approaching, it will interesting to see how things shape up in the trade market.
