Capitals prospect Cole Hutson surprises brother Lane with Calder Memorial Trophy
You may have heard by now that Lane Hutson of the Montreal Canadiens was awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy this morning. The 21 year-old stand-out defenseman received the trophy at a surprise party hosted by his family, including his brother, and Capitals prospect Cole Hutson.
The Hutson family gathered near their hometown of North Burrington, Illinois, including Lane's other hockey-playing brothers, Quinn and Lars.
It seems that Cole has also attended two of brother Lane's playoff games this past April, where he cheered for both Washington and Montreal, doing the right family thing by supporting his older brother.
Lane Hutson led all rookies this season in assists (60) and points (66), and ice-time per game (22:44) in 82 games played for the Canadiens. He is the first player to win the award for his team since goalie Ken Dryden won it in 1972.
The Calder Memorial Trophy was presented to Lane by the Hockey Hall of Fame curator, Phil Pritchard, also known as the keeper of the Stanley Cup.
"To win the rookie of the year award, I just feel really fortunate," Lane Hutson said. "I'm lucky to be part of the Montreal Canadiens and be a part of such a great support system with all my friends and family. To be able to do what I love everyday, it's been a dream."
Lane was selected in the 2nd-round of the 2022 NHL draft. He earned a probable 191,first-place votes, and finished ahead of
Dustin Wolf of Calgary, and
Macklin Celebrini of San Jose;
Matvei Michkov of Philadelphia finished 4th.
Cole Hutson is a promising prospect for the Caps, with similar offensive skills, and can pass the puck like his brother Lane. Wherever he's played, he's put-up impressive points for a d-man.
In 2023-24, with the US U18 National Team, Cole recorded 51 points (15g, 36a) in 51 games played, and in 2024-25, with Boston University, posted 48 points (14g, 34a) in 39 games played.
We'll be keeping an eye on Cole Hutson as he develops through the ranks.
