The veteran forward is expected to continue his career overseas with HC Lugano in the Swiss National League

Capitals prospect Mike Sgarbossa set on playing in Europe next season.

Ian Oland from RMNB writes that La Gazzetta del Ticino reported that Mike Sgarbossa will take his career overseas, signing with HC Lugano of the Swiss National League. The report coincided with the team's announcement of a two-year deal for defenseman Connor Carrick, with both moves covered by the Swiss sports outlet the same day.
"Sgarbossa's exit this summer comes after recording 31 points (7g, 24a) in 35 games this season for the Bears. He played in Hershey's first three playoff games of the Atlantic Division Semifinals. The Canadian center came out of the lineup in Game 4 on Friday, May 9, as center Garrett Roe was inserted in, and head coach Todd Nelson opted to go with 11 forwards and 7 defensemen so Brad Hunt could suit up on the power play." -Oland

Oland also writes that Sgarbossa, a long-time leader for the Hershey Bears, is set to move on after six seasons with the Washington Capitals organization. Since joining in 2018-19, the 32-year-old forward appeared in NHL games in five of those years, tallying 15 points (7 goals, 8 assists) over 45 games. He also chipped in with 2 points (1 goal, 1 assist) in three appearances for the Capitals during the 2024-25 season.
"Sgarbossa did most of his damage with the Bears as their first-line center. During his first season with the club, he had a career year, scoring 30 goals and collecting 65 points. Over the past three seasons, he primarily served as the centerman for wingers Mike Vecchione and Ethen Frank, one of the best lines in the American Hockey League." -Oland

Over 13 AHL seasons, Mike Sgarbossa amassed 467 points in 609 games, playing for the Bears, Moose, Thunderbirds, Gulls, Admirals, and Monsters. At the NHL level, he recorded 25 points (9 goals, 16 assists) in 93 games with the Capitals, Panthers, Ducks, and Avalanche.
We wish him the best of luck in this next chapter of his professional hockey career.
