Dimitry Orlov, who spent over 10 years with the Washington Capitals, will now face his former team in a new light, trying to eliminate them from the playoffs starting Tuesday night.
Capitals set to face former teammate in Round 2 against the Hurricanes.
Katie Adler from RMNB writes that More than two years after departing D.C., Dmitry Orlov has faced the Capitals nine times in the regular season, but Tuesday night will mark his first postseason meeting against his former club.
"Orlov and the Caps may not share any blood ties, but they aren't too far off. After Washington drafted him in 2009, Orlov played the first 11 seasons of his NHL career in DC, developing from a fresh-faced rookie into a key part of the Capitals' defensive corps." -Adler
Despite the shared history between the teams, John Carlson emphasized that he's approaching the series just like any other.
«You're worried about yourself, and that's literally it, your team and what you're trying to do out there. It doesn't matter if it was my brother out there.» -Carlson
Beating Orlov and the Hurricanes won't come easy for the Capitals. In 2024-25, he was third among Carolina defensemen in both points, 28 (6 goals, 22 assists) in 76 games, and average ice time at 20 minutes per night. His physical edge will also be an asset in a gritty matchup against Washington.
Orlov also told The Athletic's Cory Lavalette that this series will be an important one for him.
«You never know how life could end up, you know? And right now, I'm on a different side. I want to win. It's going to be an important series for me as a person.» -Orlov
The Capitals and Hurricanes will meet at Capital One Arena for Game 1 on Tuesday at 7:00pm.
