Carolina Hurricanes defeat the Washington Capitals and advance to Eastern Conference Final
The Washington Capitals season has officially come to an end. What started as a fairytale run in the regular season ultimately fell short in the playoffs, as the Capitals were throughly outmatched in their first-round series. The Carolina Hurricanes sealed the deal with a 3-1 victory at Capital One Arena, sending the Caps' packing in just 5 games.
The Washington Capitals played a respectable game but failed to generate offence when it mattered most.
Despite Spencer Carbery's bold roster moves ahead of Game 5, the Carolina Hurricanes were just too much to handle.

According to the Washington Post,
Andrei Svechnikov scored the go-ahead goal with just under two minutes left and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Washington Capitals 3-1 in Game 5 on Thursday night, winning the second-round series and advancing to the Eastern Conference final for a second time in three years.

Anthony Beauvillier got Washington on the board with a strong individual effort at 13:41 of the 1st period - unfortunately, it would stand as the team's only goal of the night.

Seth Jarvis scored the dagger of the game, capitalizing on the empty netter to put this series to bed.
This season gave the Washington Capitals plenty to be proud of.
Few expected the team to finish second overall in the league standings - a surprising and impressive accomplishment that caught everyone off guard, myself included.
Adding to the excitement,
Alexander Ovechkin broke Wayne Gretzky's AKA "The Great One's" all-time scoring record, creating a historic moment that will go down as the defining highlight of the year.
Now, with the offseason underway, GM Chris Patrick will look to make key adjustments in hopes of building on this successful season.
