The Washington Capitals are gearing up for what should be an entertaining Eastern Conference matchup against the Boston Bruins, but the Caps roster has unfortunately taken a significant hit. According to sources, defenceman Matt Roy will be absent from the team due to "personal reasons".
Sometimes in pro sports, we forget that these players are human too. In Matt Roy's case, it's clear that something personal is going on in his life that has led him to step away for a little while.
While the nature of his absence remains unclear, fans are understandably concerned, as Matt Roy has emerged as a fan favourite on the team.
Matt Roy to miss Boston Bruins game for personal reasons
According to sources, Matt Roy is currently not with the team in Boston. To make matters even more difficult, the Capitals will be facing-off against the red-hot Carolina Hurricanes tomorrow, and Matt Roy is expected to miss that game as well.
Since being acquired by the Los Angeles Kings during the offseason, Matt Roy has been a steady presence on the Capitals blue-line, posting an impressive +28 rating on the ice this season.
While having Matt Roy missing from tonight's lineup comes as a significant blow to the Caps' back-end, the team has their safety measures in place.
For tonight's game against the B's, Matt Roy will be replaced in the lineup by Dylan McIlrath -- a big test for the former 1st round pick.
So far this season, Dylan McIlrath has only played 11 regular season games, tallying 2 assists while posting a +2 rating on the ice.
Carbery has previously signaled that he wants to get McIlrath and fellow healthy scratch Alex Alexeyev time in the lineup ahead of the playoffs, though Roy's family circumstances ultimately forced the change.
Tonight's matchup marks the final regular season game between these two teams, with the series currently tied at one a piece.
