Hershey Bears playoffs start tonight
The AHL Hershey Bears will host the Lehigh Valley Phantoms tonight in Game 1 in a best-of-five Atlantic Division semifinal series.
The Hershey Bears will be chasing a three-peat in the Calder Cup Playoffs.
Bob Flounders from Penn Live writes that only one American Hockey League team has ever won three consecutive championships, the Springfield Indian (1960-62)
"Hershey, the Atlantic Division regular-season champion, finished 44-20-7-1 and earned 96 points, two more than runner-up Charlotte." -Flounders
The Bears earned themselves a buy in the first-round, and played their last game on April 19.
Bears head coach Todd Nelson, who guided Hershey to back-to-back Calder Cup victories, expressed that both the coaching staff and players are fully embracing the pursuit of a third straight title.
«The guys all know about it, it's been talked about ever since we had the (pep) rally after the last championship win. The guys all know about it, but we have to take one step at a time. We're focused on the first round. The guys all understand what's at stake. They understand the expectations of the Hershey Bears' fans and the people of Hershey. They expect us to win championships. I know it's a really high bar every year. But, why not?» -Nelson
Bears veteran forward
Matt Strome acknowledged the importance on the regular season but also made it clear that his team is eyeing the pursuit of another title.
«I think kinda every team goes through it. We played into almost July the last two years, so some guys have been here for a while and been grinding for 10 months of the years, where other teams play seven months of the year. There were times this year where we kinda had to take a step back and just look at the big picture, if we had a couple of bad games in a row. It was alright. Obviously, we want to win every game, but we have to be ready for Game 1." -Strome
