But how do the fans feel about him? RMNB conducted a survey and asked, On a scale of 1-5, how happy are you to have John Carlson on the Caps? Very happy, it turns out. He scored an average of 4.3 across 4 surveys.
When Carlson was on the ice with Ovechkin, Caps were a plus 10 in goals, despite opponents generating 3.3 expected goals/60 against them. The duo took chances by pinching and forcing passes.
Yet, when Carlson was on the ice without OVI, the expected goals/60 was below the league average. In fact, this was the case in every year since 2016, except for 2020, when the number was about equal, with or without Ovi.
Jon Carlson is a constant puck carrier and an elite passer, making him quite noticeable on the ice. As a result, he sometimes risks appearing like a floater when he's not scoring.
John has one year remaining on his contract. Beyond that, time will tell where he will play.
