Game 4 between the Montreal Canadiens and Washington Capitals was filled with heavy hits, controversy and a rising tension and it ended with Montreal losing 3-1 in the series.
The defining moment came when Tom Wilson made a massive hit on Canadiens Alexandre Carrier in the third period which was leading directly to Brandon Duhaime's game-tying goal.
«I felt like it's going to be a whistle because they were in their defensive zone and far away, but I guess I don't really know the rules,» Dobes said. «I feel like it should have been a whistle. It was kind of a scary hit, but I guess the rules don't apply for everyone in this league. I have no idea.»
Alex Carrier left the game and did not return and Martin St. Louis praised Alex Carrier's toughness but did not provide an update on him.
The tensions escalated further after Alex Ovechkin delivered an open-ice hit on Jake Evans late in the second period and Alex Ovechkin received only a two-minute minor for interference, but Jakub Dobes said that it deserved suspension consideration.
Martin St. Louis backed his rookie's frustrations by claiming the Capitals' players benefited from embellishment and expressing disappointment in the night's officiating.
«I'll be careful with my words, but it's hard to watch some of these calls,» St. Louis said. «Tonight, the mandate was about embellishing. [General manager Kent Hughes] talks with the supervisor each game day. We are told the things they want to clean up. Embellishment was one of them.»
Spencer Carbery said officiating didn't affect his team's approach.
Despite frustrations, no suspensions or major discipline were handed out by the NHL except from fines for pregame unsportsmanlike conduct between Dylan McIlrath and Arber Xhekaj.
The series now shifts back to Washington for Game 5, with the Capitals needing one more win to advance and the Montreal Canadiens facing elimination.
