The Washington Capitals season is officially over after losing to the Carolina Hurricanes in just 5 Games. That said, head coach Spencer Carbery made himself available to the media today, giving his take as to what potentially went wrong in the series.

As you probably noticed, the Washington Capitals were decisively outmatched during the series, failing to keep up with the Canes' high powered offence.
Well, there might be a reason for that.
According to Washington Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery, a key factor to the lack of success in the series stemmed from the absence of defenceman Martin Fehervary, who suffered a devastating knee injury in the late stages of the regular season.
Washington Capitals defenseman Martin Fehervary sustained an injury to his right knee during the April 15 game against the New York Islanders. Following the incidnet, Fehervary underwent a successful surgical procedure to repair the meniscus and would miss the entire post season.
In a recent interview, Carbery highlighted the significance of being without a player like Fehervary against the Hurricanes.

Spencer Carbery hints that Martin Fehervary injury contributed to the loss against the Carolina Hurricanes

«I think we knew, our players knew, our staff knew, that when we lost Marty, and I don't think the rest of the hockey world really knows, how significant of a player as he is for our team,» Carbery said on Breakdown Day, Saturday. «He does a lot of things that go unnoticed, and so we knew it was a significant blow to our back end.

«I still would agree with what I said at the time, is we could still, and we've won a series in the first round against Montreal without Marty, but it was a massive blow to lose him.»
Although losing a player like Fehervary was detrimental, hopefully he's back in form for the debut of the 2025-25 regular season.
