A scary incident occurred during last night's game against the Chicago Blackhawks. Washington Capitals forward Aliaksei Protas was escorted off the ice due to an injury. According to sources, it appears that Protas was cut by an opponent's skate, forcing him to leave the game.
It's no secret that hockey is one of the most dangerous sports in the world.
It's fast-paced, and with razor-sharp blades -- accidents are bound to happen.
With 15:38 remaining in the third period, Aliaksei Protas was involved in an awkward collision with a Chicago Blackhawks player.
While not yet officially confirmed, sources speculate that Protas may have been injured by a skate blade, though the severity of the injury remains unknown.
Haven't yet seen an update on Aliaksei Protas after he left early in the third. After studying the contact, his reaction, and that he was standing unassisted in the locker room, I think he might've been cut behind the tongue of his skate. Not good but better than feared if so.
What has been confirmed is that Protas is indeed injured, and head coach Spencer Carbery offered an update during his post-game press conference.
Spencer Carbery provides update on Aliaksei Protas
«Yeah, [he's] going to need an evaluation tomorrow, so I'll know more tomorrow,» Carbery said. «But he is - yeah, I'll find out tomorrow.»
According to RMNB, Protas skated 11:39 of ice time in the 5-3 win, recording two shots on goal. He was in the locker room when Alex Ovechkin scored career goal No. 894 to tie Wayne Gretzky for the NHL's all-time goals record, missing the bench-clearing celebration. Protas, though, could be seen taking part in the postgame locker room celebration and group picture.
While it's a positive sign that Protas joined the locker room celebration, another injury to a key member of the Capitals' core so close to the postseason is certainly concerning.
More details to follow.
